Horizontal or Stair-Step Cracks
Cracks running across the wall or stepping up through mortar joints are a sign the wall is under pressure from the soil outside. These patterns are different from harmless shrinkage cracks and usually mean the wall is starting to move.
Bowing or Leaning Walls
A wall that is no longer plumb — bowing inward at the middle or leaning at the top — is actively failing under lateral soil pressure. The bow will not correct itself and tends to worsen with every wet season and freeze-thaw cycle.
Doors and Windows Sticking
When a foundation shifts, the framing above shifts with it. Doors and windows that suddenly stick, drag, or will not latch — especially on one side of the house — can point to uneven settling.
Cracks Wider Than 1/8 Inch
A hairline crack under 1/8 inch is often just concrete doing what concrete does. A crack wider than that, or one that is growing, letting in water, or showing displacement on either side, needs to be looked at.

Carbon Fiber Wall Strapping
High-tensile carbon fiber straps are epoxy-bonded in vertical runs to a bowing block or poured wall. They halt all further inward movement without losing floor space and without excavation. A permanent, low-profile fix for walls that are still within repairable deflection.

For walls with more significant movement, wall anchors or steel I-beam bracing provide structural reinforcement. Anchors tie the wall back to stable soil outside; I-beams brace the wall from inside. We assess which fits the severity of the bow.
Exterior Excavation (Severe Cases)
When a wall has shifted significantly or the outside soil and water pressure is the root cause, we excavate to the footer, relieve the pressure, waterproof the wall, and install proper drainage. The most involved option — used when the wall needs to be stabilized from the outside.
Freeze-thaw cycles and Northeast Ohio clay soil make this worse every winter.
Heavy clay holds water against the foundation. When that water freezes it expands, widening cracks and pushing walls a little more each cycle. A small crack this year is a bigger crack next year — that is why early repair matters.
