Running Constantly or Short-Cycling
A pump that kicks on every few minutes — even when it is dry — is either undersized, sitting in a pit that is too small, or fighting a discharge line that is restricted. Constant cycling burns out the motor early and wastes electricity.
Motor Humming but Not Pumping
If you hear the motor hum but the water level is not dropping, the impeller may be jammed with debris, the switch may be stuck, or the pump has failed internally. A humming pump that is not moving water needs service now — before the next storm.
Visible Rust or Iron Bacteria Slime
Rust on the housing, a corroded switch, or that orange slimy buildup in the pit all point to a pump living on borrowed time. Iron bacteria are common in Northeast Ohio groundwater and will clog a pump and discharge line over time.
